And history is now and Ukraine. And...

I took all but the last photograph three years ago, as the world rallied around Ukraine.

In Toronto, on the Sunday following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, people from across the region gathered to support their brothers and sisters in Ukraine.
Canada has welcomed 300,000 Ukrainians since.

Last Friday, the president of our southern neighbour and former ally switched sides. Last night he fully revealed his support for the Russian dictator by suspending military support to Ukraine.

Today, he declared economic war on Canada. This, perhaps, is the first volley in a broader project of assimilation.

My last letter referenced the effects of the Anschluss on my grandfather and, implicitly, my mother's and my family.
An American Lebensraum philosophy and a possible Canadian Anschluss are now real concerns.

It's difficult not to note parallels between Austria's situation in 1938, and Ukraine's and Canada's today. History is now and ...


It's the logic of capital, I know, but it ain't subtle.

Fairmont Hotels operates the Royal York Hotel, formerly the flagship property of Canadian Pacific Hotels.
It seems Fairmont's American owner has decided to place the US flag in the position reserved for the home country in its Toronto property.

Last report Toronto is not in a US state.
